Definition
An Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA) is the electronic version of an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) sent from a payer to a provider detailing how a claim was adjudicated. It includes payment amounts, adjustments, denial reasons, and patient responsibility. ERAs follow the ANSI X12 835 transaction standard.
Why it matters
Processing ERAs and EOBs manually is one of the most labor-intensive tasks in revenue cycle management. Each ERA can contain dozens of line-item adjustments that must be reconciled against expected payments. Organizations that fail to process remittances efficiently risk missing underpayments, overlooking denial trends, and delaying patient billing.
How Ventus helps
Ventus reads claim outcomes from payers, including denial reasons and adjustment codes, and normalizes them across 300+ payers. Denial intelligence uses those outcomes to show why claims were denied and what to check before the next claim goes out.
