Definition
Healthcare Clearinghouse refers to a HIPAA-defined intermediary that translates, edits, and routes healthcare transactions between providers and payers (e.g., 837P/837I/837D claims, 835 remittances, 270/271 eligibility). Clearinghouses perform format conversion and front-end edits, returning acknowledgments such as 999/277CA and reject reasons within minutes. For example, a claim rejected in 277CA for a subscriber mismatch can be corrected and resubmitted the same day.
Why it matters
High first-pass acceptance reduces costly rework and accelerates cash. Improving acceptance from 92% to 98% on 100,000 monthly claims avoids 6,000 reworks—saving roughly 3,000 staff hours (at 30 minutes each) and pulling cash forward by 3–5 days across a multi-entity enterprise.
How Ventus helps
Ventus works alongside your clearinghouse rather than replacing it. Where a payer's answer is not available electronically, Ventus gets it from the payer portal or by phone, and returns claim status and denial reasons in one normalized format across 300+ payers.
